"Sleeping Magnolia," a poetry video presentation

"Sleeping Magnolia" is the first poem in my poetry book Bare Ruined Choirs. The book's sequence of poems begins with the idea of meeting someone, of falling in love. The poem is about that connect between woman and Divine Woman.

The poem was written when I was twenty-one years old and had been practicing the TM technique for almost a year. I was in my senior year at the University of California, Davis. At the center of the UCD campus is the Quad, a park, and in the Quad is a huge magnolia tree, its scent in spring filling the air with perfume. The poem was published in the campus literary journal, California Quarterly.

The images and video sequences of the magnolia tree were shot this last spring when the magnolia tree at the front of the school where I teach was in bloom. Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, is very blessed to have such a beautiful tree.
